How I'm different

At 10 years old, I had just a few goals in my life – to eat, sleep and play football. It didn’t matter that I was small for my age, my football field was a pasture, or that I was a girl.

Give me the pigskin and I’d run it over you, around you and through you. I guess you could say I was determined. A friend of my great aunt once remarked how “delicate” I looked as she glanced at a snapshot of me in a plaid pleated skirt and Christmas sweater. “Ha!” my aunt countered. “You should see her throw a football!”

I can still throw a pretty tight spiral, but these days, I’m more concerned with helping my clients throw tight spirals. And generally that means helping their messages land in the ears of the intended receivers.

That requires a fair amount of skill, a hefty dose of experience, a solid game plan and great execution. But, for the receivers to grab those messages and run with them takes something more. Empathy.

  • I care whether the messages I develop are clear, honest and speak to the audience’s needs.
  • I care that I talk to people like human beings and not “things.”
  • And I really care that the ways I deliver the message respect the person’s intelligence, dignity and worth.

I guess I’m different. I believe you can truly care about people and succeed at business and life, and that compassion and competence go together.

If you agree, then I just might be your quarterback.
